In an ever-evolving world, education is the bedrock of progress. As we step into the 21st century, the traditional model of knowledge-based learning is gradually giving way to a more skill-focused approach. To address this shift and improve the quality of education, DEAN Initiative has embarked on a transformative journey with FCT Secondary Education Board . This journey began with the “Big Education Conversation and Design Thinking Training Workshop,” a dynamic and interactive training program for 20 dedicated staff members.
The workshop, led by Semiye Michael, Executive Director of DEAN Initiative, and Mrs. Laraba Grace Okah, Head of the Special Services Division FCT-SEB, brought together professionals from various departments within the FCT Secondary Education Board, including the Director/Secretary Office, Co-Curricular Division, Planning and Development Division, Science/Technology & Mathematics Division, Planning, Research and Statistics Division, Guidance & Counseling Division, and the Information and Finance Departments.
The main aim of the workshop was to initiate a meaningful dialogue regarding the changing landscape of education, equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to transition from traditional knowledge-based learning to skill-focused education and foster the development of design thinking capabilities to encourage innovative problem-solving and service improvement.
The workshop bore fruitful results, with several key takeaways. Participants left with a deeper comprehension of the imperative shift from traditional, knowledge-centered education to skill-focused learning. This transition aligns with the evolving demands of the 21st century. The workshop enhanced communication skills among the staff, including active listening and effective presentation, which are essential for better interactions with students, colleagues, and stakeholders. The participants embraced design thinking as a problem-solving approach, equipping them with the tools needed to tackle educational challenges creatively and with a user-centric focus.
The dedicated staff members who participated in the workshop left with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to their roles. They pledged to champion the transition from traditional knowledge-based learning to skill-based education within their respective departments, implement improved communication practices and knowledge-sharing strategies to enhance the overall learning experience and embrace design thinking principles to address educational challenges and consistently improve services for the benefit of students.
